One of the most frequently asked questions I receive is, ‘can I exercise after a sports massage?’

The short answer to this question is, yes you can. However, there is a little more to it.

Hard Training or Easy Training

The question of ‘can I exercise after a sports massage?’ is an incomplete question.

You can exercise after a treatment session. However, a pertinent question to ask is whether the training will be a hard session or an easy session. The advice would be not to attempt a hard training session soon after a massage treatment. An acute effect of a deep sports massage is impaired strength and power. This is totally fine. Your strength and power levels should have returned within around 24 hours. However, it does not make sense to be performing key workouts within this time frame, when your ability to perform will be compromised. An easy recovery run is fine to perform soon after a sports massage. That said, my preference would still be for an easy recovery session to be performed before the massage. However, if time constraints dictate that this type of training needs to be done following a massage, that is not a problem.
