The Heslington Mile

For the second year running Foxwood Personal Training sponsored the Heslington Mile in York. This race is organised by City of York Athletics Club as part of their York Events Series (YES). The race is in its second year now, and so Foxwood Personal Training has been the proud sponsor from the very beginning.

The whole ethos behind the Heslington Mile is to reward elite athletes for elite level performances. To this end, we have developed a tiered prize structure, as follows:

1st Place – £100 (plus the Foxwood Personal Training / Egerton’s Garage Gym winners trophy0.

2nd Place – £30

3rd Place – £20

Plus a bonus prize structure of an additional £100 to the winner for breaking the Heslington Mile Record, and a further £100 bonus to the winner for running a sub-4 minute mile.

We feel this is a sufficiently lucrative prize offering to attract the very best runners in the local area. The race is already building both in terms of number of entrants and in terms of the quality of performances. This year, the popularity of the event meant that both an A race and a B race was needed. The quality at the sharp end of the race speaks for itself, as Tommy Shaw (BUCS indoor bronze medallist) has taken the win in both 2024 and 2025.

Dominant Tommy Shaw

Shaw went into this years race as defending champion, Heslington Mile record holder and also a firm favourite to take the plaudits again. He did not dissapoint. With the outstanding pacemaking services of Cole McAndrew, Shaw stuck closely to 4-minute mile pace in the early stages. A 60 second opening lap was followed up with 2:01 through 800m. He only slowed slightly on the third lap, going through 1200m in 3:03. Weather conditions were cold and wet, and so it was always going to be tough to pick up the pace on his own for a sub-4 minute attempt. However, a finishing time of 4:07 was a great early season opener for Shaw. This will have been a great confidence booster for the City of York athlete, and University of Birmingham student, ahead of the upcoming BUCS outdoor championships.

In second place, was a superb run from fellow City of York athlete Adam Bateman, improving on his fourth place finish from last year. Bateman has spent this winter performing Strength and Conditioning work with Tim at Foxwood Personal Training, and he looks ready to move onto another level this summer.

Heslington Mile 2026

The Heslington Mile is going from strength to strength. Shaw is moving closer to the magical sub-4 minute mile mark. The strength in depth and number of competitors is on the up. It is a great way to open up the track season, and is now an established fixture in the calendar. Established star athletes from City of York, including Angus McMillan and Gianluca Mastrolonardo have already expressed their interest in next years race.

We hope you to see you there next year. Could 2026 be the year of the Heslington Miles’ first ever sub-4 minute performance?
