Are you looking for a York Personal Trainer? My name is Tim, and I am a York Personal Trainer and Sports Massage Therapist. I train clients from my completely private personal training gym in Foxwood, York. Read on to find out more about booking in for your personal training sessions. In this article I’m going to talk about:
- Who Personal Training is for
- Why you should book in with me

- How to get started

Who Personal Training is for
Personal Training is for anyone wanting expert guidance with their fitness training. My York personal trainer clients range from teenagers and young adults, right through to more elderly individuals. It doesn’t matter if you have never trained before or if you are a professional athlete. I am experienced in both scenarios. Regardless of where you are starting from, we will create the best possible plan for you. Personal Training really is for everyone.
That being said, I do have certain areas in which I specialise.
The main area in which I specialise, is in providing expert strength training guidance to support your goals.
Strength training should be included within training programmes of everyone. For elderly people, strength training is important to help maintain bone density and to maintain the ability to perform daily tasks and activities. With weight loss clients, strength training is important in order to hold on to muscle whilst losing weight (and therefore ensure that you are focusing on fat loss). For athletes, performing strength training correctly will provide a transfer effect into improved speed, power and overall athleticism on the field of play.
Within the field of strength training, there are two particular areas in which I specialise:
- Strength Training for Runners
- Strength Training for Women
Strength Training for Runners
Strength and Conditioning is on the increase amongst competitive runners. Strength training is important for runners for a variety of reasons. When done well, strength training creates robust runners that are less injury prone. This leads to more consistency with your running training, which in time results in big improvements in running performance. However, there are also direct performance benefits to strength training for runners. The main two direct benefits are improved top end sprint speed and improved running economy. Both of these elements are improved through the intelligent application of strength training. This will have a positive impact upon running performance across the full spectrum of running distances.
Aside from providing expert strength training guidance for runners, I also train other demographics. A large percentage of my client base is women looking to slim down and / or tone up. Once again, I focus on the strength training aspect of the equation in order to support your goals. Over the years, I have become very adept at achieving the type of look many women want to achieve through strength training.
Of course, I have a range of other clients as well. I have helped men to bulk up. Some of my clients have achieved the necessary standards to pass the military fitness tests. I have helped many people to rehab following injuries.
York Personal Trainer – Why you should book in with me
My name is Tim, and I am a York Personal Trainer. I have been active in sports and fitness for a long time. I began competing in athletics whilst still in primary school. By the age of fourteen, I was the fastest 1500m runner in Britain for my age. However, over the following teenage years I struggled with several injuries. This negatively affected my performances as well as my mental well being. Undeterred, I continued to compete. However, instead of being the British no.1 I was now no longer even the fastest runner in my school, and I was now about the the fifth fastest runner for my age in my local town. This gave me a thirst to study everything I possibly could about training methods and injury prevention, as I was desperate to return to my previous standard as a runner.
In my bid to learn as much as possible, I went on to higher education. I studied at one of the leading universities for Sports Science in the country. My first degree was a BSc (Hons) in Sport and Exercise Science. I went on to post-graduate study, where I achieved an MSc in Strength and Conditioning. My Sports Science research is published in peer reviewed scientific journals. I also became a lecturer in Strength and Conditioning at The University of Derby.
Dual Career as Coach and Athlete
As my career in Sport and Exercise Science and in Strength and Conditioning continued to develop, I also began to return to my previous high standards in middle distance running. I remained injury free for years whilst in my twenties, and by the time I hung up my spikes at the age of 30, I was proud to be able to say that I had achieved all of the following:
- Selected to run for England on three occasions
- British Champion in the Mile in 2011
- England National Championship 1500m bronze medallist in 2011
- North of England 3000m Champion in 2005
- North of England 1500m Champion in 2012
This has shaped me to become an excellent personal trainer, as I understand the struggle when it comes to pursuing a specific goal. I can empathise with people when things are not going their way. I understand the importance of staying injury free. And, through my own personal journey I have developed a deep understanding and knowledge on the theory and application of training that few other personal trainers can match.
Over the last 15 years, this background has led to me working with many elite level athletes, including:
- Olympic Athletes
- Commonwealth Games medallists
- World Masters Champions in Athletics
- World Record holders in Masters Athletics
I am the most experienced personal trainer and the most qualified personal trainer in York.
What is involved in a Personal Training session?
I specialise in the expert provision of strength training to support your goals. As such, strength training will form the basis of your Personal Training session.
Before we get started with personal training sessions, we need to gather information. We will discuss your training goals, your training experience, lifestyle factors that may need to be taken into consideration, and any relevant injury history. This will enable me to devise a strength training plan that is bespoke to your particular requirements. Once we have got started with personal training sessions, I will then continue to learn what makes you tick, what exercises you enjoy doing, and how well you recover from session to session. This all goes into making sure that your sessions are specific to your personal needs.
However, there are also some elements that are always present in the personal training sessions of all my clients:
- Personal Training sessions take place at Egerton’s Garage Gym in York
- Personal Training sessions are 1 hour in duration
- There is always some kind of warm-up element, before the main session begins (although even this warm-up element will be specific to you and your training goals)
- We work hard, and stay focused (but at the same time, we don’t take ourselves too seriously. I will push you, but unlike some trainers, I will not shout at you. We will manage to have a chat and a laugh as well – it’s important to have fun!)
- If something causes pain, then we don’t do it. In my opinion, there is no exercise that is so important that you must do it. So, if something is causing pain, then we will replace it with an exercise that is not causing pain.
What happens in between your Personal Training sessions
This is an area that that will be very individual to you and your requirements.
During your personal training session, I will often advise you on what training you should be doing in between your sessions here at Egerton’s Garage Gym. However, the details of my advice will depend on a range of factors, including:
- How often are you having personal training sessions with me?
- What are your training goals?
- What other commitments, in addition to your training, do you have?
Competitive runners train with me to receive expert guidance on strength training to support their running. For these runners, the most common frequency of sessions with me is once per week. With females training with me for fat loss, the most popular frequency of sessions with me is twice per week.
When females train with body composition related goals, I will usually suggest strength training three times per week. So for those clients that are having three sessions per week with me, my recommendations for training in between these personal training sessions will usually be based around cardiovascular sessions and / or increasing step count. However, for those of you having less frequent personal training sessions, my advise for additional training in between is likely to be different.
Egerton’s Garage Gym (The EGG)
Your personal training sessions take place at Egerton’s Garage Gym in Foxwood, York.
I created The EGG because I wanted to create a safe space for personal training that was completely private, so you can train without having to share the space with any other gym members. At the same time, I wanted to make sure this was a training facility that did not compromise on quality. As such, when you train at The EGG you find high end strength training equipment from world leading brands, including:
- Eleiko
- Watson Gym Equipment
- Hammer Strength
- Rogue
- Wolverson Fitness
York Personal Trainer – High End Private Gym
These brands are the mark of absolute quality. I could have spent substantially less money by kitting the gym out with cheaper equipment from second rate brands. However, that’s not we are about here.
My aim is to provide the people of York with a personal training experience of the highest possible quality. This means the equipment and the layout of Egerton’s Garage Gym needs to match the level of knowledge and experience I bring to the personal training game.
This is also why, to the best of my knowledge, The EGG is the only genuinely private personal training gym in York. There are other personal training gyms in York that claim to be completely private. However, they achieve this by dividing the gym off into separate sections, so different trainers have exclusive use of their particular section. This achieves the privacy aspect. But it also means that any given client does not have full access to all of the equipment within the gym.
Here at Foxwood Personal Training, we do things differently.
As I am the only personal trainer that operates out of The EGG, you get the best of both worlds. You receive a completely private personal training experience where you do not have to share the gym with anyone else. You ALSO get to make use of the full gym and all the incredible equipment!

York Personal Trainer – Let’s Talk
Once you have got in touch, I will quickly respond. From here the first step is to get to know a little bit more about you. This can be done via text message or by email. It is often great to jump on a phone call for a chat. A phone call can speed things up, rather than having several messages back and forth. The other benefit, is that we can both get a feel for whether we gel with each other. This is helpful, as it is important that you get on with your personal trainer.
You don’t have to be friends with your personal trainer. But, you should always view your personal trainer as a trusted advisor; and for that to happen there needs to be a mutual respect between the personal trainer and the client. So a phone call before you get started is useful for both you and I, to get a feel for whether we would work well together.
Alternatively, you can always come and have a look around and decide for yourself. If you would like to come and have a look around the gym, and have a chat to me in person, I would be more than happy to arrange a time for this.
Whether you choose me as your personal trainer or not, I would always encourage you to have a chat with your trainer before getting started. This way you can determine whether that trainer is the right fit for you, and vice versa.
So that’s about it for now – if you have any questions or want to chat further about personal training in York, please get in touch. I look forward to hearing from you.
